What Guests Wish They Knew Before Their First London Stay

Aug 4, 2025Whether you're visiting for business, pleasure, or a bit of both, London is one of the most exciting and vibrant cities in the world. But for first-time visitors, there are a few surprises that can catch you off guard, from transport quirks to cultural nuances.
Here’s what many guests say they wish they’d known before their first London stay, so you can arrive better prepared and enjoy your trip from day one.
1. London is Big - Really Big
First-time guests are often surprised by just how spread out London is. Unlike some compact European cities, it can take 30 to 60 minutes to get from one area to another, even within Zones 1–2.
Tip: Plan your days by area to avoid crisscrossing the city unnecessarily. For example, explore the South Bank, Westminster, and Soho on one day, and save East London or Camden for another.
2. The Tube is Great, But Walking is Better (Sometimes)
The London Underground is reliable and efficient, but not always the fastest option for short distances. Stations can be large, with lots of walking inside, and there are often quicker overground alternatives.
Tip: Use apps like Citymapper or Google Maps to compare routes on foot, bus, or train before deciding. And always stand on the right when using escalators.
3. Tipping Isn’t Mandatory (But It’s Appreciated)
Unlike in some countries, tipping in the UK is more relaxed. Service charges are often added automatically to restaurant bills (usually 12.5%). In cafes and pubs, tipping is not expected.
Tip: Feel free to tip 10–15% if service was exceptional, but know that it’s not an obligation.
4. You Don’t Need to Carry Cash
London is almost entirely cashless. From street food stalls to black cabs, most places accept contactless cards and phone payments.
Tip: A contactless debit or credit card will get you onto public transport and into just about any shop. No need to worry about exchanging large amounts of currency.
5. The Weather Can Change Fast
You might start the day in sunshine and be caught in a drizzle by lunchtime. London weather is famously unpredictable, even in summer.
Tip: Bring a compact umbrella and layers you can take on and off. A light waterproof jacket is your best friend year-round.
6. There’s So Much More Than the “Big 5” Attractions
Of course, Big Ben, the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, and the British Museum are worth seeing. But many guests find their favourite memories come from discovering the less touristy sides of the city.
Tip: Visit local markets, smaller museums, riverside pubs, and neighbourhood parks. Staying in a residential area like Peckham, Woolwich, or Stratford gives you access to both iconic sights and authentic local life.
7. You’ll Walk Much More Than You Expect
Even if you’re using public transport, you’ll still do a lot of walking. Tube stations often involve stairs, tunnels, and transfers. And the best parts of London, from hidden alleyways to canal paths, are often best explored on foot.
Tip: Wear comfortable shoes, and plan for regular breaks. Fortunately, London has no shortage of great cafes and green benches to rest your feet.
8. Staying in a Serviced Apartment Makes Things Easier
Guests often say they wish they’d booked a serviced apartment sooner. Why? Because the flexibility, space, and home comforts make everything simpler.
- Cook meals when you want
- Have space for shopping, luggage, or a pram
- Do laundry during longer stays
- Enjoy privacy and a more local experience
Serviced apartments are especially helpful for families, remote workers, and anyone staying more than a few nights.
